Cougars 2nd XI v Heathmont. Driving to the game today I had butterflies in my stomach! Were they nerves, optimism or just sheer relief that we can play some cricket. Alas we won the Toss and elected to send Heathmont in too bat, call me crazy but due to the lack of batting practice during pre-season for most clubs I thought it was worth it!!! The hunch paid off as we had Heathmont 5/32 at the first drinks break. It was a great first hours play of the day and it has really set a good strong standard for the season ahead, everyone came switched on ready to play and do the job required today. It was great to see all the bowlers bowling stump to stump and very limited loose deliveries. After a small partnership of 42 for the 6th wicket we gritted the teeth and dug deep to make sure that they didn't get away from us and undo all our good work, it is pleasing to roll a team for 99 off just 42 overs. Kusal Pathiraja 4/14, Blake Ellis 3/19, Max Roberts 1/10 & Shehan Rodrigo 1/12, can't not mention the runout early in the innings with Haydn Thompson & Max Roberts combining for stellar effort so early in the season. Special note that Kusal is on a hat trick first ball of next game!! We then had 26 overs to bat, always a tricky task. We lost Nipuna Welmillage early but then a solid partnership from Wes & Blake steered us in the right direction. Cougars 2/50 at stumps. Wes Howell 24, Blake Ellis 20 n.o. The job is far from over with 72 overs to bat next week a great opportunity for everyone to spend some much needed time in the middle.
